Creativity // Beat The Creative Block! {#CrazyRebelliousArt: Day 12}

Thursday, November 12, 2015

Woo! I'm back on track with #CrazyRebelliousArt (well just, I have half an hour till it's the 13th). Apologise with there being a lot of back posting this week but at the end of last/start of this week I just wasn't really feeling it! And although I've got a bit of a cold right now I wanted to try stick and get back into this so I've been doing my hardest! Anyway, today's theme is to talk about "How you get out of a creative block" and I've spoken about this topic kind of before, but that was over a year ago! So today I thought I would just do a list of maybe like 20 or so (I'm just going to keep writing them till I can't think of anymore), that may help you over come creative block!

The ways I overcome creative block...
  1. Take a break- Get away from what you're doing and just stop think about it for a while.
  2. Explore somewhere- Go to the woods, an art gallery or just the shops! Give yourself time to expose your brain to new things
  3. Speak to people- Whether it's online or offline. To a friend or a twitter chat. OR even just to your cat! Let your mind wander through other conversations that have nothing to do with it.
  4. Get a fresh pair of eyes- Unlike the last point, get someone to actually look at your work and give you feedback
  5. Find some new music- Go on YouTube, Spotify or other music apps and explore music that is similar to what you already listen to. It might give you a little push or something to think about.
  6. Try something new- Been wanting to try hand lettering? Do it! Not painted in ages? Do it! If you're stuck in what you're currently doing, just go try something new that you'l have no expectations of.
  7. Build on old work- Again, similar to the last point, if you've done something in your work that you know works try doing it again but in a new way! For me, I do this by creating new mandala's each week!
  8. Read something- It doesn't matter what it is. Whether it's a book, a blog or a magazine. Just READ!
  9. Watch something- Yeah pretty much same as the last, watch that new episode of that programmer you've been meaning to watch or catch up on your YouTube subscriptions.
  10. Change your surroundings- Do you usually work in a stuffy bedroom like me? Well that might be your problem. If you work, relax and sleep in the one room its bound to get a bit hard to work in there some times! Mix it up, try going to a cafe, an open studio or have a crafternoon with a friend!
  11. Doodle!- Doodling should always be your best friend, it is mine! So many ideas I come up with start in doodles and span into something totally different!
  12. Play a Video Game- I don't mean go buy a Xbox or PS4 if you don't have one. You can just as easily play a game on your laptop, phone or tablet! There are so many beautiful games out there as well that you can just say it's an excuse to look at beautiful graphics!
  13. Look at tutorial/teaching videos- Use something like YouTube, CreativeLive or SkillShare to kick start your inspiration by seeing how to do something or expose your mind to new ways of thinking.
  14. Look at your favourites- And by favourites I mean anything like your favourite artist, designer, crafter or whatever else! Be inspired by what people you like are doing and hope it puts something into place with your own creativity.
  15. Use new supplies- Although I've said try something new already, I'm not really meaning that with this point. Try doing something you usually do but with say a new pen or sketchbook! The way that pen works might help trigger a way you could enhance your work.
  16. Get yourself a drink- Come on, we all know that a drink of water is good for you but some times you need a coffee or tea as well! And even more, some times you need a little alcoholic beverage too!
  17. Go to a craft fair- During this time of year, there are soo many craft fairs about so go and find one! It can inspire you or can help you make new connections with other creative folk.
  18. Write about all the things that inspire you- Whether it's nature, music, science or whatever! Write it all down and see if there's anything you haven't explored before, or in a while and use that to start something.
  19. Delve into the internet- Although sometimes it doesn't help, give yourself a little time to explore what's new on Pinterest, tumblr, instagram or whatever else and see if there's some colours, shapes, textures or patterns that inspire you!
  20. Bake something- It probably won't seem like this could beat a creative block and it may not but who doesn't love cake. Plus you gotta eat something with #16!
So that's a few ideas for ways to beat creative block! What are some of your ways to beat creative block and stay inspired? Let me know below!
