LIFE LATELY // Jim Campbell Exhibition

Wednesday, January 28, 2015

Last week with a friend from Uni, we decided to head along to the DCA (Dundee Contemporary Arts) to visit the Jim Campbell: Indirect Imaging installation/exhibition. Since the show opened up at the end of last year I really wanted to visit it because it just seemed fascinating
The exhibition was set up in a few different rooms slightly disconnected. The exhibition is created by the use of different LED lights and some specifically are made up of light sculptures created using a collection of video clips.

My personal favourites in the exhibition was the Titles Plane (2011) which was a slope with hundreds of glass bulbs hanging down from it. It has a very surreal feeling to it as from the outside there was a black mesh curtain defusing the lights slightly but going round the curtain you could see the full extent of it all. While in the curtained area you were able to get up close and personal to the lights.
The other sculpture I adored was the Exploded View (2010-2011). Close up it looks like a lot of very small LED lights hanging downwards on a wire, like fair lights but when looking from a distance then flashing lights creates images of birds flying and commuters walking past.
There was several other sculptures on display which also used sound, images and text. It was honestly a really awesome exhibition and I would keep your eyes peeled to see if Jim Campbell does one any time near you if you're interested in that sort of stuff too.

Unfortunately I hadn't brought my camera with my so only had my phone to take pictures of each thing so the quality isn't amazing and the shows finished now so I can't even go back!
